Donna's Biking a Century for Leukemia Site
Every five minutes, someone in the United States learns that they have leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma - that's nearly 300 people a day. An estimated 106,700 people in the United States will be diagnosed with one of these diseases this year.
Every nine minutes, a child or adult dies from these same diseases!! Leukemia is the number one killer of children under the age of 14! Childhood is a time to be spent chasing butterflies on a spring day, swimming with your friends in the summer, frolicking in the leaf piles in the fall, and having snowball fights with your friends in the winter... I guess, this all varies with your geographical location, but, you understand. It should not be a time spent being sick and weak after months of chemotherapy, having spinal taps every couple months, having blood drawn several times a week, and spending countless hours in the hospital. This isn't how they should spend their young lives. It isn't how anyone should spend even one day of their life. I have joined the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. Team In Training is the largest fundraising organization within the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. Each Team is paired with a local leukemia patient who becomes our Honoary Coach, Sam Boylston is ours. Sam was diagnosed with leukemia a few days after his seventh birthday. Now a year and a half later, he has five weeks of chemotherapy that will hopefully place him in full remission. Through all of this Sam has retained an uncanny sense of humor and is such a motivator to us all!! Sam is the little boy in the center with our cycling team. I have pledged to raise a minimum of $3900 and cycle in a century-ride that takes place in Lake Tahoe this June. The money you donate will go towards research, patient/family care, and educating those stricken with such blood-related cancers and the general public. PLEASE, help us find a cure for Sam and for everyone else who is battling from a blood-related cancer. We can do this with your help!! Thanks and God Bless!! |
